Does an eSIM have a phone number?

Sometimes. Some eSIM plans include a phone number (voice + SMS). Others are built purely for mobile data and don’t provide a number. If you’re traveling, it’s common to use a data eSIM for connectivity and keep your main SIM active for your regular number.

If your travel plan is “data-only,” you won’t place standard carrier voice calls through the Phone app using that eSIM line. You’ll use calling apps instead.

Three ways travelers make calls with an eSIM

1) Use an eSIM plan that includes voice + SMS

If your job or travel style requires calling local businesses by standard phone number, a voice-enabled plan can be worth it. If you mostly call friends/colleagues, data + WhatsApp is usually enough.

“My eSIM has data but I can’t make calls” (common reasons)

You’re using a data-only plan

This is the most common reason. You can still call using WhatsApp/VoIP, but not standard carrier calls from that line.

Your phone is using the wrong line for calls

With Dual SIM, iPhone/Android can route calls through the wrong line. Check your default voice line in settings.

Activation isn’t complete
